How It Works
Signing Up
Using Bettizens is easy and intuitive. The platform is programmed in two languages, English and Spanish and we have two modes, which according to your preferences you can change using the small icon on the right: “Light / Dark“. Of course, the first thing is to Register.
To do this, you only need to complete the short Registration Form with your Email, your Username (it’s the only thing you cannot change later), and your Password.
You will be automatically redirected to the Profile page, where you must change the Profile Photo and complete the required fields in order to access all the features.
Completing your Profile
Your Profile is made up of four groups of fields (Overview, Others, Social Activism, and Education & Work), of which only the first group contains the required fields. Although it is not mandatory to complete the rest of the areas, it is desirable to interact better with the rest of the members.
For security reasons and to preserve the purpose of the Platform, you will not be able to access any of the only-Members pages and features until you complete the required fields:
First and Last Name (By default, this field displays the username you used to register, but you must change it to your full name. This field will always be visible to all other Members), Country of Residence (Lives in:), City & State/Province of residence, Age Range, and Why Do You Want to Join Bettizens?
With respect to each one of them, except your Full Name, you can define who will see your information: Everyone, Only me, All Members, or My Friends.
Here you can also enter (optional) your personal URL on Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin. For example https://facebook.com/johnsmith67 or https://linkedin.com/janesmith81. And you can modify the Profile Header View & Layout or leave them as default.
After you click Save, you will see the message: “Profile completed successfully“, but in order to be able to access all areas of Bettizens you still need to change the default profile image by your profile photo.
Even in cases where an exception is made and access to the platform is allowed without changing the profile picture, if it is not changed within 72 hours, your account will be deleted by the system.
Please remember that we are a private digital platform and in accordance with our “right of admission“, once our team reviews your Profile, we may decide to ask you some additional questions or limit/delete your account without prior explanation.
Understanding Your Profile
Your Bettizens Profile is very functional and offers you various features. At the top, you will see a Menu with 5 visible icons: Activity (your personal activity), Profile, Notifications, Messages, and Friends. Please, notice there are arrows at both ends. If you scroll to the right you will see other icons with more possibilities: Groups, Views, To-Dos, Reviews, Invitations, Forums, Events, Docs, Media, and Settings, for now.
Let’s look at each of them separately:

As we stated above, all Bettizens members can upload an avatar, edit profile information, and customize personal account settings.
Profiles also provide a personalized frontend dashboard for each member to view their own activity, groups, friends, and private messages, if these optional components are activated.
Notifications are a central aspect of the user experience on the Bettizens Platform. By default, new notifications are displayed in the admin bar profile menu, right next to the navigation menus.
By default, notifications are created as soon as one of the following things happen:
Activity
- A member mentions you in an update @username
- A member replies to an update or comment you’ve posted
Messages
- A member sends you a new message
Friends
- A member sends you a friendship request
- A member accepts your friendship request
Groups
- A member invites you to join a group
- Group information is updated
- You are promoted to a group administrator or moderator
- A member requests to join a private group for which you are an admin
Every user can view their read and unread notifications on their “Notifications” page on their profile and easily:
- Mark notifications as “read”
- Mark notification as “unread”
- Delete notification (in batches if needed)
Email Notifications
Users can also choose to enable or disable emails when new notifications are received. This can be done through their Settings > Email page.
Public Messages
Bettizens provides ways for you to send a message publicly to another member of the site or network. Members will be notified of public messages by a new message count in the Notifications circle in the upper Toolbar as well as receive email notifications if enabled by said member.
- Mention the member by using the “at sign” ( @ ) + member username, e.g. @john3204. Mentioning the user can be done anywhere within the Bettizens platform:
- Status Update form in the News Feed page, Group Activity page, or on your own profile page
- Activity Stream Comment and/or Reply form
- Forum Topic Post or Reply Post
- Click on the Public Message button located below or beside the member’s avatar on his/her profile page. That brings you to your own Activity Status Update form with that member’s username already mentioned. Add your message and click on the Post Update button.
Private Messages
Private Messaging works like an internal platform email. Members can message people on their friends’ list as well as reply to received messages. Each member will have their own individual Inbox and Sent messages folders, as well as a, Compose message screen. Members will be notified of new messages by a new message count in their own Messages tab, in the notification circle in the toolbar, as well as receive email notifications of the private message, if enabled.

Bettizens’s Friends component is a way for our members to identify that they know other members. Friendship is requested from one member and accepted by another. The Friends feature works best when other components are active:
Once the Activity Stream component is active, these relationships are logged to both members’ activity streams, allowing anyone to see the relationships other community members have made.
With the Groups component active, it allows members to invite their friends to join groups they are members of.
When the Settings component is active, members can choose to turn off new friendship notification emails.
One common use case is to help identify which members of your community have met in person. Using the Friends component as a way to say “we’ve bowled together” or “I met you at a meeting against Big Money in Politics” is a great way for our members to keep track of everyone they’ve bumped into in the past.
At Bettizens we don’t put a cap on the number of friends each member can have, but we also don’t encourage having a lot of friends just for the sake of saying we have a lot of friends. When you ask someone for a friendship or when you accept someone’s friend request, let it be because both of you can do something for each other and for the causes we defend.
Groups in Bettizens are gatherings of members, posts, and any other user-generated content.
Any member can create Groups, but we limit the number so as not to fall into the same dispersion as other social networks. Each group must have a purpose, and meaning, and be useful to its current and future members.
Group administrators (who created the group) can also approve requests to join the private group, invite friends to congregate within a hidden group, establish communications among members, extend privileges to other members, and enable new features (such as Group Forums if enabled by Super Admin) among others.
This one is simple. You can see who’s viewed your profile in the last 7 days, 30 days, 1 year, and all time. This way you may know your profile’s popularity and even ask your visitors to accept your friendship.
This section is very important to us. It allows Bettizens members to add tasks to their to-do list and allows them to ‘edit’, ‘delete’, ‘mark-complete’ their tasks. Members can create the category for to-do and add to-dos according to category wise.
It also has a due date reminder feature which reminds the user that their due date has arrived and sends an email or Bettizens notification to the user. And, the user can export all to-do tasks in a CSV format.
You can add your own category (+) or you can choose any of the 12 categories universally recognized as the most important for personal organization:
Business Important & Urgent
Business Important Not Urgent
Business Not Important But Urgent
Business Not Important Not Urgent
General Important & Urgent
General Important Not Urgent
General Not Important But Urgent
General Not Important Not Urgent
Personal Important & Urgent
Personal Important Not Urgent
Personal Not Important But Urgent
Personal Not Important Not Urgent
You can select the task completion date and priority order (Critical, High, Normal).
The same works for groups that you have created.
This feature allows only Bettizens members to add reviews to other Bettizens members. But the member can not review itself. And if the visitor is not logged in, he can only see the listing of the reviews but can not review. The review form allows the members to even rate the member’s profile out of 5 points with multiple review criteria.
To add a Review, first, go to Members and click on the Member you want to review. Then in the Icon Menu which is between the two arrows (to go left or right) find the star symbol and click on it.
Then it only remains to click on “Add Review” and select an option from 1 to 5 in each of the 4 available criteria.
When you click on “Invitations” you will see two buttons:
Send Invites: you just need to fill out the form below to invite a new user to join this site. Upon submission of the form, an email will be sent to the invitee containing a link to accept your invitation. You may also add a custom message to the email.
Pending Invites: these are the ones you must accept or reject when someone invites you to a Group.
At Bettizens we see the Forums as a fundamental tool of the Platform. Unlike what happens in traditional social networks, where it is difficult to follow up on a topic or topic, we use the forums to carry out very specific discussions on topics and sub-topics that require clarification, and coordination or can become plans of action.
In our Forums, the most important thing is the individual contribution of each member to the purpose of the group linked to that specific Forum and to the knowledge or collective action in each case.
And please remember one of the 5 main rules of Bettizens: EVERYTHING IN ITS PLACE, therefore, in each Forum, and in each Debate within each Forum, only what is directly related to that specific topic can be published.
The Events Section is still UNDER DEVELOPMENT, but it will allow you to view events created by others and decide whether or not to attend, create events, and view events you have created yourself.
The Form to create an event is very easy and intuitive and will allow you to create and manage your event in a matter of a few minutes. ¡Remember, it’s COMING SOON!
Bettizens Docs features add a collaborative workspace (document service) for our community. Part wiki, part document editing, part shared dropbox, think of this section as a modest Bettizens version of the Docs service offered by Google.

It’s just your Media Gallery: Albums, Photos, Videos, and Music.
It’s easy and useful to organize your files in albums.
A logged-in Bettizens member has access to his/her own Settings page where various options can be configured. This can be accessed by clicking the User Menu in the top-right-hand corner and clicking on the “Settings” link.
The following is a list of subpages available in the Settings area by default:
General: change your account email and password
Email (Set your email notification preferences: Yes o No)
Profile Visibility (Select who may see your profile details: Everyone, Only Me, All Members, My Friends)
Group Invites (you can restrict Group invites to your friends only)
Export Data (you can request an export of your personal data)
Blocked Members (a list of members you currently block).
Main Feed
At Bettizens you can take advantage of global, personal, and group activity feeds with threaded commenting, direct posting, @mentions, and system notification support.
Our Main Feed is similar to the Facebook “Wall” and it allows the widest interactive experience. Our members can write on each other’s “walls” and “Like” each other’s posts.
Members can upload photos, organize them into albums, and share them for other members to see and comment on. And they can edit or delete their posts or comments.
Using the content box that appears at the top of the main feed you can post text, photos, links to other posts, polls, or quotes. You can also set your status and decide if everything is published on your profile or in one of the groups you belong to.
At Bettizens we do not have manipulation algorithms of what is published. The posts appear in chronological order and are moved up or down on their own merit: the ones with the most likes or comments first.
Here we do not compete for more “likes” and we respect our time and that of others: we publish really interesting things that are useful to the rest of the members of Bettizens or the group where they appear.

Community Features
Bettizens is all about creating and strengthening a Community of activists and supporters of causes and issues related to Justice and Social Progress. The Members interface allows closer relationships between people with more or less similar ideas and thoughts, while the Groups and Forums (without manipulative algorithms), facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experiences, and the possibility of coordinating joint actions.
At Bettizens we understand that everything in a community platform revolves around its members. That’s why we invested a lot of effort to provide you with a variety of customizable profile fields that allow our members to share details about themselves.
The Bettizens Platform allows members to organize themselves into public, private, or hidden social areas with separate activity feeds and member listings.
You can create public, private, or hidden groups and set different rules and settings depending on the group type. Also, you can allow all group members, or only organizers, and/or moderators to invite other users to the group.
All group members can post photos, articles, thoughts, external links, polls, quotes, etc.
The Group Activity Stream is the default Home tab for any group. Here, all members who are a member of the group can add status updates for the group.

Using Betizens’ Forums our members can communicate in a structured, bulletin-board style fashion. They can embed photos, emojis, and more in their forum posts and replies.
Each group can create its own discussion forum.
The Bettizens Platform has also Sitewide Forums (like the “Help Forum”) that are not isolated to any specific group.
Downloading the App
At Bettizens, we have developed and are still improving a Progressive Web App, a modern technology that in a few years should completely replace the so-called “native” applications. In addition to doing it directly, in the case of Android devices, you will soon be able to download the App from the Google Store and a little later from the Apple Store.
The App allows you faster access to the different areas of Bettizens and also allows you to access some pages even if you are not connected to the Internet.
Other
At Bettizens we encourage our members to take the time to read the Privacy Policy and the Terms of Use, as well as the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).
We take very seriously both the privacy of your confidential information and keeping Bettizens serving the purpose for which it was created. That requires some rules, legal provisions, and a lot of discipline and seriousness in complying with what we all accept when we join this platform.
Our Knowledge Base is made up of the Blog that is part of bettizens.com and various sites (blogs, articles, wiki) that are hosted by bettizens.org (still in development). It will take time, but the idea is to grow the most extensive and useful database, knowledge, and experiences about the Movement for Progress and Social Justice in the world.
The Bettizens team is working to make available a very useful Directory for all those in the world who care about causes and issues related to Progress and Social Justice. Among other categories, the Directory will include:
Organizations
Political, Social, Community Leaders
Resources and Tools
Friendly Businesses
Others
